It took me six years to graduate from college. But please don’t judge me. I have some pretty good reasons (or excuses) why I stayed in school that long. This blog won’t be about that story though. Let me tell you about my parents gift to me when I was finally able to graduate. They gave me a plane ticket to Singapore, City of the Merlion. I got $300 for pocket money on a five-day trip, you do the math.
This was to be my first trip out of the country. It was a four-hour trip – also my first time to be inside a plane that long. When I got my first stamp on my passport, I knew that this is going to be it. I arrived at night and my first thoughts were, “Wow, it’s so clean here and the people are so organized, falling in line for the taxi.” The Changi Airport itself was a tourist attraction and a museum of their ancestry and designs. I couldn’t forget that the taxi I rode out the airport was going at 140 kph and it seemed like the car wasn’t moving at all, the highway was so smooth.
Nature lovers can still enjoy even in the city because one of Singapore’s tourist destination is theGardens by the Bay. Twelve tall towers called Supertree Groves, a 50-meter vertical garden that not only showcased exotic collection of plants, the Supertrees were designed to produce clean air to support the city.
Most of Singapore’s tourist spots are separated only by a walking distance. Next stop is theMerlion Park. Tourists were crowded below the giant statue of a Lion’s head and the body of a Mermaid. The Merlion was spitting a waterfall to the river in front of it. I blended in with the crowd and thankfully got a good selfie with the Merlion.
Just across the river, is the Sky Park on top of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. When the 55-storey hotel opened in 2010, which I saw from Nat Geo channel, I promised myself I would NEVER EVER go to that dangerous place. But I did! I am really scared of heights. It was a bit difficult for me to go to the railings and enjoy the view – not to mention the difficulty of stepping away from the railings. I was able to conquer my fear of heights, but I guess only for that day. I’m still scared of heights. But the view from up there was breathtaking and immobilizing.
So, at the Sky Park is a very big infinity pool. Go to the edge of the pool and you will be looking down the city like the birds eye view. My aunt, her daughter who works at Singapore and I chilled the afternoon away drinking sparkling wine at Ku De Ta club lounge restaurant just beside the infinity pool. The place made me feel like a princess because the 6-foot tall waiter knelt down to get our orders and serve us our drinks. They are very hospitable to their guests.
Next stop is Sentosa, an Island just outside the city. Sentosa is full of attractions like Resorts World, Underwater World, and Merlion Plaza. I went to Universal Studios, where I got to “Ride the Movies”. It’s really like being in a movie set and getting to interact with the characters from the movies. It’s a bit hard to describe the feeling of being there. But what I really loved was the Ultimate 3D Battle in the Transformers Ride, where Optimus Prime and I fought evil in the city. My whole day was spent at Universal Studios, but it didn’t feel enough.
Other places where I went to when I was in Singapore were:
China Town – Where you can buy “pasalubong” gifts for the family at home
Sand Castle Beach at East Coast Park - Best public park for anything and everything, especially for pitching tents
Bah Kuh Teh Restaurants – Singapore’s best pork ribs soup and Chinese tea at an affordable price
Other Food Trips to Singapore were:
Jumbo Seafood Restaurant – Savour an award-winning Chilli Crab and ‘live’ seafood dining
Makansutra Gluttons Bay – Taste Cereal Shrimps and meet lots of Filipinos dining there
I am very very thankful to my family and to God for my whole education, my college graduation and the five wonderful days at Singapore.
