Mindanao’s first ever Electronic Music Festival of Colours and we were there. One of the Philippine’s biggest summer beach party, Summerfrolic 2014, is presented by FrolicFox and La-ne’s at the Dahican Strip.
It was a 2 and a half hour drive from Davao to Mati City. I am so thankful for the nice accommodation at La-ne’s Katulganan. We arrived at Mati at April 3 in the evening so we had good rest before the long party.
The festival lasted for two days from April 4-5. In the morning, it was time for some personal relaxation and chilling in the beach. The strong Amihan wind compensated for the hot summer sun. It was in the mornings when the beach was safe to dip in. You are 100% visible from others (just in case something happened) and the wind, waves and undertows were not that huge compared to ones in the afternoon.
April 4 also happened to be my Dad’s 51st birthday and my cousin’s 25th birthday. More cause for a celebration!
One the first day of Summerfrolic, guests were welcomed with a tribal drum band. The beach sports competition also started. There was Beach Volleyball, Beach soccer, and Frisbee. The Surf and Skim competition opened on the second day.
At Dahican, we pitched our tents at Dahican Surf Resort (DSR). We had to stab our tents deep into the sand to make sure they were not gonna go flying when we weren’t around, just like the other tents did.
My favorite shops were Nine Nails and Havaianas pop-up shop. I brought my white Summerfrolic shirt from Nine Nails which I wore at the Color Dash, the final night. I was also lucky to have worn my Havaianas slippers to Mati because they were giving out free-size sandos to random people they see wearing Havaianas slippers.
Every night, the music was our calling. Electronic music and Dubstep woke the sleepyheads for a whole night of dancing, drinking and partying. The crowed just raved with the music all night long. The highlight was the FOAM PARTY – two large machine guns spraying white foam to everyone. It was funny how the people looked like wild snowmen after a while.
I remember the two pretty girls of Deuce Manila. Yeah I liked DJ Nina and DJ Ron Poe. They were so cool. But I particularly liked DJ Ace Ramos and his mixes of alternative and rock music.
Just recently, I found great interest in DJs from of the Philippines. Although I am not a party animal, I am fascinated by the mixes and the new music they create with the mix tools they use. I’ve only seen them live on clubs. It’s my first time to be in an arena where it’s the DJs that man the stage. I’ve only been to concerts of rock bands, so the Electronic Music Festival was a first for me.
On the final night of Summerfrolic, suddenly more people filled the event area. Neon Bandanas, LED foam sticks and white shirts were everywhere. Purple, yellow, blue, red and green powder was thrown to celebrate the Color Dash as early as 4PM.
The Adventures Time team was of course waiting for WERWOLVZ, the DJs from Las Vegas. They are known for having one of the most energetic stage presences in the scene today. When they got on the stage, I was star struck to the highest light years level. They are so freaking awesome! They are rock stars! They are wild and fueled and so was their music. The head banging! The half-shaved hairstyle looked so cool on them. They are the gods!

I’m not really sure what time the party ended. But I’m pretty sure my eyes hurt when I woke up the next morning. I didn’t get that much sleep.
April 6 and it was time to go home. Thank you Summerfrolic for the great party! Thank you family and friends for being there! Thank you God for the beautiful beach and the beautiful people! Thank you thank you! Good bye Mati, I hope to see you again soon!
